Study Questions: Oresteia (Week One)1.Paris of Troy took Helen when he visited the city of Argos. Helen was the wife ofMenelaus, king of Argos, and brother of Agamemnon. Zeus, the god of hospitality, wasangered because of Paris’ actions. Paris violated the Code of Hospitality, therefore Zeuscommanded the two kings – Menelaus and Agamemnon to seek revenge against Troyand if they do not follow him, the city of Argos will suffer a disease. Aside from thecommand of Zeus, Paris’ actions were also a huge disgrace to Argos. Therefore,Agamemnon was motivated to bring back honour to the city, and helped his brother,Menelaus, whose reputation was ruined because his wife left him. The people of Argosquestioned if seeking revenge against Troy is worth it because the lives of young menwill be sacrificed just for one woman.Summary:Paris took Helenviolated the Code of Hospitality Zeus got mad told the two kings to seekrevenge and if not, disease for the city of ArgosParis’ actions disgrace to Argos
