Colgate-Palmolive Co. sold and manufactured a shaving cream called “Rapid Shave”. They hired Ted Bates & Company, to advertise their product and prepare a television commercial to show the audience what the shaving cream can do and the toughest tasks performed. Colgate-Palmolive Co. supposedly used sandpaper and tested it on it, after researchers some evidence showed that they did not use sand paper. It was in face a mock up made of Plexiglas and had been glued, this fooled the audience in believing the toughest tasks could be done by using this shaving cream. The FTC then issued a complaint against Colgate and Bates, violating the section 5 of the TFC act. Question 1: Ethics are what governs a conduct of a firm and how they should treat the audience/consumers. Ethics is also being true and realistic to what you’re presenting to your consumers. Colgate- Palmolive should be relativism to what they’re showing their audience, and in the case above they did not act in that way. As a firm, they should not show or state that their products can perform such great quality of results only if the experiment is proved. However, they did not use actual sand paper. The defendants in the case are Colgate-Palmolive Co. and Ted & Bates had acted unethical because they firstly mislead a large audience showing what the razor does but is not a true demonstration. So the defendants acted unethically because they mislead the audience and that is considered lying to customers. It is also unethical because they said that it used sand paper, but it
