EppsDavid EppsProfessor ChristopherSOCI 110129 January 2017Social StructureThe social structure that fits best in with the wild college town of Athens, Georgia would have to be that of “organic solidarity and gesellschaft.” I would describe it as modern day survival of the fittest in that everyone will make alliances with whoever they have to, and do whatever they have to do in order to survive, including begging on the streets or embracing their entrepreneurial spirit; nobody cares about another person’s survival as long as they’re survival isn’t being threatened. The division of labor is so large that it would take a couple of days to figure out the hundreds to thousands of different jobs and services readily available here. There are so many different types of individuals that believe so many different things, and go about their days in so many different ways; I see something new and odd almost every single day. The community has an impersonal feel to it, because if there isn’t a preset relationship in place, most people will just ignore a stranger and keep walking; the people that do talk to strangers are just using “impression management” ("Presentation of Self," n.d. p.84) so everyone sees them as a caring person.
