Emily Yan Federalism Graded Discussion 12/10/14 Evaluate the importance of checks & balances within the context of maintaining Revolutionary Republicanism throughout the 1780s. Revolutionary Republican ideology throughout the 1780s advocated for the dispersion of power to avoid an overly-powerful central government. A system of checks and balances between the government and the governed, and one within the government itself, was necessary in order to prevent this centralization of power. In Federalist Paper #10, Madison promoted a system of extended government that would avoid over-centralizing power as well as over-dispersing power. The notion that power should be dispersed among many bodies rather than condensed in one was one that had been prevalent since the states were under British rule. Madison's beliefs paralleled with these ideas: he claimed that smaller groups would breed factions that were more likely to develop into minorities and majorities, where the latter would dominate over the former.
