Q UALITATIVE A NALYSIS R EPORT Name: Rukiya Umoja Date: 05/15/16 Sample Number: 9 Project A: Hg + ions are present Confirmation Tests: To 1 mL of the unknown, 10 drops of 6M HCl were added. No precipitate formed. After stirring the mixture, it was centrifuged for 30 seconds. 1 drop of 6M HCl was added. No more precipitate formed. The supernatant (SB) was transferred into a clean test tube. To SI.1, 3 drops of 6M acetic acid and 5 drops of 1M K 2 CrO 4 were added. A yellow precipitate did not form. To PI.1, 2.5 mL of hot water and 2 drops of 6M HCl were added. PI.1 was then heated in a boiling hot water bath for 3 minutes and centrifuged. The decantate was then removed. The aforementioned steps were repeated 3 times. 10 drops of 6M aqueous ammonia were added to PI.1 and subsequently centrifuged. The supernatant (SI.2) was transferred into a clean test tube. A black precipitate formed confirming the presence of mercury in the original sample. SI.2 was treated with 10 drops 6M HNO 3 to acidify the solution. No white precipitate formed. Project B: Bi 3+ ions are present Confirmation Tests: After lowering the pH between 0.3-0.8 by adding 2 drops of 6M NH 3 , 22 drops of thioacetamide were added to SB. SB was then heated in a hot water bath for 6 minutes. Sample was centrifuged for 1 minute. The supernatant was transferred to a clean test tube labeled SC. It was then covered and saved for Project C. To the precipitate (PII), 3 drops of 1M NH 4 Cl were added, stirred and then centrifuged for 1 minute. Wash liquid was discarded.
