Though the country is not immune to recessions and depressions, America was built upon the fact that any individual can have life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This is evident when evaluating the lives of immigrants who enter America, especially those who left due to economic hardships in their previous country. One of these examples is in Amy Tan's short story“Two Kinds”. In the story, the mother of Jing-Mei has her ideas on her daughter's destiny as a prodigy. Notwithstanding, the daughter has other plans for her future.
