Auden utilizes tone and irony to express the speaker’s immense love for someone else and that love is not always a smooth journey to follow. From the beginning of the poem, time is given the ability to speak, and that is used as a comparison to the speaker. Time is more capable of telling the loved one what he/she wishes to know while the speaker struggles to find reason in all things.
