1 Chemistry 391 Fall 2007 Problem Set 3 (Due, Monday September 24) The Carnot cycle for an ideal gas working substance is: The problems are based on this cycle (but I switched to lower case letters – i.e. Aa etc., and the labeling of the points is different from the class notes). 1. a) Write down ab w , bc w , cd w and da w for the legs of the cycle. b) Add to get cycle w . c) Eliminate c V and d V from b) using the ideal gas relations for adiabats. d) What is ab q (the heat withdrawn from the hot reservoir)? e) Obtain the efficiency expression cycle ab w e q = in terms of temperatures using your results. 2. Again consider the reversible Carnot cycle above. With 1 mol of an ideal gas with C V = 3/2 R as the working substance. The initial isothermal expansion occurs at the hot reservoir temperature of T hot = 600ºC from an initial volume of 3.500 L ( V a ) to a volume of 10.000 L ( V b ).
