Engineering as defined in Webster's, is the application of science and mathematics to objects useful to people in structures, machines, products, systems, and processes. Design is defined as the creative art of executing aesthetic or functional designs. Engineering design is the act of creating the specifications for a product or process that best satisfies the design criteria. The Role of Graphics Visualization Communication Documentation Visualization Helps you "see" the problem and possible solutions. Must be careful of time devoted to a possible solution. Often, too much work is devoted to visualization too early in the process. Communication More and more detail with refinement CAD tools allow for quick changes What if scenarios Team members need to "speak" to others Documentation A way to permanently record a solution Traditionally, paper drawings were produced Most storage methods decay with time CAD software allows for paperless recording Easy, efficient, cost-effective Proper Product Data Management (PDM) techniques are necessary The Design Process Identify the problem Generate concepts as possible solutions Evaluate the concepts against the criteria Iterate to a solution Document the solution Design Constraints What is the problem?
