Sophia Tasselmyer Vocab Part 1 Cutline (or caption) A sentence or paragraph that provides descriptive information about a paragraph. Attribution A phrase that identifies the source of a fact, opinion, or quote in a story. Beat The area or subject that a reporter is responsible for covering. Headline Words in large type running above or beside a story to summarize its content. News According to William Randolph Hearst, it's anything that makes a reader say "Gee  Whiz." Lede/Lead The first sentence or paragraph of a story. Lift-out Quote A graphic treatment of a quotation taken from a story, often using big bold, or italic type
