Athens was not just a city and much more than a state. oAthens will begin as an aristocracy and slowly as time moves on it will develop into a democracy.oAthens will provide the western world with philosophy, democracy, architecture, drama and the contribution of Athens will be such as consider a miracle. oGreece has navigation which means there’s a lot of trade or war meaning Athenians are interacting with other civilizations. Easy climate will make human interaction and public life easier. oThey were curious about the meaning of life. They had an open minded approach, and impartiality arrives in the western world thanks to the Greeks. They had a love of beauty and harmony. They had a keen sense of balance. Theyhad an innate sense of the importance of politics. The Greek contribution is so important that the world politics comes from the polis. For the ancient Greeks the polis was the natural human habitat, politics was a normal way of life. An existence devoid of politics cannot be a truly human existence, being political meant expressing yourself as a human being. These considerations lead us to the important Greek excellence in all things human: exam -The Greeks discovered an equilibrium between the citizen and the polis (community) -In order to define yourself as a distinct human being you have to partake in political life and public affairs-Being political meant expressing who you are-In other words, political participation in the community was an essential component in the development of personal identity -So in order to express yourself as a human being you had to participate in public life-Consequently, the community was itself was the collective expression of each individual citizen’s views on society
