Email: [email protected] Course Description: MLCS 102/102L is the second part of Adrian College’s two- semester introductory sequence, which fulfills the College’s language skills proficiency requirement. By learning Spanish you will be able to communicate with a community of 400+ million people worldwide, including 38 million in the United States—13% of this country’s population. You’ll be using your Spanish in virtually every career, from business to education, to law enforcement, social work and the health professions. The Panorama textbook and accompanying website (SuperSite) are designed to teach not just vocabulary and language structure, but also to familiarize students with the rich and dynamic cultures of the Spanish-speaking peoples. Class time will include group work, conversations on a wide variety of topics (in Spanish!), diverse language-building activities, quizzes and examinations. Tips for success in this course: Learning a language is much like mastering a sport or a musical instrument. For you to be successful, it is very important that you practice the language every day . The material selected for each day is to be studied before class, so that the limited class and lab time can be spent on reinforcing the language rather than mere “lecturing.” Attendance and in-class participation are extremely important, as is the completion of the daily assignments on the Panorama Supersite. The more engaged you are with the language, the more you will learn, and you will discover how rewarding it can be to know a second language. Required Text/Course Materials: Great news! We will work with the same textbook and website we used in MLCS 101/101L: Blanco and Donley, Panorama , 5 th Edition, Vista, 2017. Must include Supersite & WebSAM Code. ISBN 978-1068004- 363-1. Additional Resources at Adrian: A full-service language Computer Lab is available in Goldsmith Hall, Room 105. Also, Spanish-language television is broadcast at regular times each day in the Satellite Lounge. It is also a comfortable place to meet with friends. 1
Language Proficiency Goals: Spanish 102 aims to achieve the following NCSSFL- ACTFL “Can-Do” statements at the “Intermediate Low” level.
