The study of the relationship between psychological behaviour and physical health and illness, with an emphasis on wellness and the prevention of illness. The Focus of Health Psychology Health psychology is concerned with the promotion, treatment and maintenance of health. Health Psychology: An Overview A Historical Perspective Behavioural medicine An interdisciplinary field that integrates behavioural and medical knowledge and applies that knowledge to health and disease. Health psychology A subfield of psychology that provides psychologys contribution to behavioural medicine. Community Perspective Community health psychology The study of population, medicine and health care intervention (applying) psychological principles to change health practices of communities rather than individuals (Barraclough, Batten & Wellard, 1989). Focus of community health psychology Improving health and well-being of community members through research and action orientated toward producing significant social change. Health Psychology Health Psychologists Definition of Health A complete state of physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (World Health Organisation, 1948).
