Chapters 14 and 15 What is a character? heritable feature (eye color) What is a trait? character variant (blue, brown) What is an allele? alternative version (variant) of a gene What is a hybrid? heterozygous What is true breeding? homozygous What is the Law of segregation? 2 alleles separate during gamete formation and end up in separate gametes What is the Law of Independent assortment? 2 pairs of alleles segregate independently of other allele pairs or each allele pair (pair of characters) segregates independently of other allele pairs during gamete formation What does Dr. Cramer mean by "particulate" inheritance? alleles are distinct units, are not lost or blended. If homozygous, the allele is expressed again, (you see the phenotype again) Is the P generation homo - or hetero- zygous? Is the F1 generation homo- or hetero - zygous? Where does the F2 generation come from? What is a test cross? dominant phenotype x homozygous recessive What does it show? whether dominant phenotype is homo- or hetero-zygous Homologous chromosomes carry two alleles for a trait at the same locus How do you determine probabilities? When do you use the Multiplication rule? to calculate the chance of getting 2 particular alleles ex: Aa x Aa to get aa is 1/2 x 1/2 = 1/4 When do you use the Addition rule? when there is more than 1 way to get a aprticular pair of alleles ex: Aa x Aa to get Aa is (1/2 x 1/2) + (1/2 x 1/2) = 1/2 Not all gene alleles are completely dominant or recessive. Incomplete Dominance example Snapdragons have 2 alleles for either red or white flowers. Homozygotes are red or white, hetreozygotes are pink . The genotype and phenotype will have the same ratios. Give 2 human disease examples
