EUROPEAN RENAISSANCE literally translates as “rebirth” started in Italian city-states in the early 14 th century – rediscovering the art, literature, philosophy, sculpture, and architecture of the classical world (Greece, Rome, Asia) spread to northern Europe and England by 1500

The Renaissance is key because it had a number of important effects on European history: 1) New political orders (end of Feudalism); the birth of Machiavellian politics (the Tudors -- Henry VIII and Elizabeth I) 2) New religious beliefs (Protestant challenge to Catholicism) 3) Changes in consciousness and attitudes in Europe (Humanism and Art)
