Unformatted text preview: Zachary Cleveland English 1101 June 10, 2008 Out of all the problems that John Taylor Gatto discusses in Against Schooling, I believe that his point on how business and marketing support compulsory schooling was most interesting. As he explained it, large corporations support the schooling system so that it will turn out children trained for efficient work. He also discusses how marketing fits into this theory; that we put our children into a world of greed and envy by keeping them young for so long with no responsibility or independence. We can overcome the problems that Gatto states in his essay very simply. I believe that parents are the most important factor in a childs adolescence. It is up to the adults to take action and make sure that their children grow up not embracing the values that are drilled into the young population today by marketing and industry. In the years that our schooling system was designed, industrialization and mass production were becoming huge in the United States. It only seemed logical at the time to start teaching students were becoming huge in the United States....
