5.02 Reading Poetry The American people of the late 20thcentury and early 21stcentury faced many challenges. Maya Angelou poem "on the pulse of morning", was for the American people, not for specific races. In Angelou's first lines, she talks about " a rock, a river, a tree",which was compared to how we as the American people should act. The tree regards to how the American people should keep their heads held high, a river; of how the things that people say are falling out of their mouth uncontrollably, a rock; how the American people are ignorant enough to not know that they need to come from under that rock with how their behavior is. Angelou continued to compare the Rock, River and, Tree to how the Americans live in society. She brought up those examples to let us know as the American people that what we were doing wasn’t the right thing and that it wouldn’t change anything unless we changed how we acted as individuals. It also let us know as Americans that we have to love and work together to accomplish that
