SOLUTION: 12-9=3 CORRECT SOLUTION : (Square stickers= 12+9 OR _-9 =12) PART 1: Identify whether the problem is join, separate, part-part-whole or compare and justify using evidence The problem type is “compare”. This is evident in the question because it states that Francis has 9 fewer star stickers than square stickers. When “more than” or less/ fewer than” is used the problem is a comparison problem. Another piece of evidence to show that this is a compare question is that the student has been given one quantity to work with and then a difference, suggested by “fewer than”. These two can then be used. One can be subtracted from the other to find the second quantity, or the answer that is needed to solve the problem.
