PHIL 2060 – 11/09/16 Charles Mills – The Racial Contract Dissertation on Marx’s theory of ideology Mills wants us to think about questions about racism and how they are not discussed in philosophy It is a way of silencing the fundamental political world we have today Racism is a system of power and it decides the rights, duties, opportunities, benefits and infringements “White supremacy is the innate political system that has made the world what it is today.” The social contract – moral as well as social, political and epistemological (theory of knowledge) Sets rules of cognition that privileges white supremacy The social contract in Rousseau, Hobbes and Locke is fictional Mills tells us that the racial contract is real and this is the major difference between the two All kinds of documents - that make racism official The Dread Scott case – has the American constitution behind it These documents are used to deny people of rights and citizenship In Canada, we had the Indian Act (1876) – deals with all aspects of the lives and society of the Aboriginal people
