AN EVALUATION OF THE BOOK SELLING INDUSTRY 2 Abstract It is easy to see in the eyes of the everyday customer that book retail shops aren’t as popular as they once were. To understand why this is we must look at the industry as a whole on a competitive market standpoint. In order to do so, we must observe where the book selling was and where it is today. With the popularity of multimedia, it is hard to imagine books being as popular as it was at one time, the threat of book selling has hit its inevitable decline, or so it may seem.

AN EVALUATION OF THE BOOK SELLING INDUSTRY 3 An Evaluation of the Book Selling Industry Using Porter’s Five Forces According to the New York Times (Alter, 2015), from 2008 to 2010 print sales of books dwindled as consumers flocked to e-books, which had a 1,260 percent increase in sales, along with other types of digital media players. This made the bookstores struggle to stay open in beliefs that e-books would overtake print by 2015. But this wasn’t so, even though the sales of books from an actual book store has gone down, the percentage of book sales via the internet has gone up, giving hope to book sellers around the world. Using Porter’s Five Forces Model from our textbook Management Information Systems for the Information Age (Haag & Cummings, 2013) starting on page 19, figure 1.10, we can analyze how strategy can drive technology decisions in the book selling industry, this includes: buyer power, supplier power, threat of substitute products or services, threat of new entrants, and rivalry among existing competitors. Buyer Power The buyer power for the book selling industry is high for both the business owner and the consumer. A business owner would want the buyer power to be high giving more choices from whom to buy stock from, getting the best prices.
