UKRANIANS UKRAINE was divided between 2 empires. 3 quarters under Tsarist Russia Empire . ¼ are under Austro/Hungarian Empire . The MAJORITY of catholic Ukrainians would come from western Ukraine which is under Austro Hungarian Empire . The bulk lived in central/eastern Ukraine which is Tsarist Russia Empire . In Ukraine the majority of people are orthodox. Second place is catholic. Third place is protestant. In the western area of Ukraine the places the majority of the people came from were: Bukoyana Galicia Carpatho -Ukraine (A.K.A > Ruthenia) In 1899 immigrants started to use nationality to distinguish who they were. Western Ukraine was not independent but it was not part of the Soviet Union. In 1939 things changed, Hitler (leader of notzi) and Joseph Stalin (leader of Soviet Union) signed a non- aggression pact. In 1939 by signing this pact meant the Soviet Union would not enter WW2. (Let’s not forget the U.S. didn’t enter until 2 years later “pearl harbor happened in 1941) soviet union promised not to attack Germany and Germany not to attack soviet union. Hitler in 1941
