The duel of sexes is a time bondidea that throughout the many years of human existence has changed, andwill continue to. Winterson’s experience is dictated by the time in which shewas raised in for the ideas of her demanding mother were in part learnedfrom the society’s general idea of normalized roles. Her disregard forfollowing these roles caused her childhood to become confusing, and full ofself-doubt, which ultimately is the moving plot of her novel. Religion is verysimilar to the pressure of the roles of sexes but also more challenging forsomeone who is questioning, and or understanding their sexuality.Winterson, again, was raised in a time where religion was very important tothe people, along with the new innovation from different religious preachers.Lastly, the process of understanding herself and her past separate from hermother is measured with that of time thus making it a very important aspectof her society, and her creative process.
