Paper Suggestions EEP 162-Economics of Water Resources, Spring 2007 You are fairly free to pick any topic that is related to the economics of water resources. This handout includes a list with topics from previous years to give you a sense of what people wrote on in the past. In addition, I will have a number of examples of well-written papers in my office that you can look at during office hours or by appointment. There is also a survey article entitled “The Economics of Water, Irrigation and Development” which may help some of you with formulating paper ideas. You can find this paper at the following link: http://are.berkeley.edu/ There is no strict page requirement for the paper. You should write enough to examine your topic thoroughly, but at the same time be concise and do not make it artificially lengthy. As a rough guide, 10-15 pages is probably a good length. In order to make sure you are on track with the paper, feel free to hand in a short proposal onWednesday, April 4. This is an opportunity for you to get feedback, but is NOT required. Also, we will be devoting one section late in April to discussing our topics. This will be nothing formal, but give all of you a chance to talk for one or two minutes about your paper topic. Once we get closer to the time, I will let you know what week we will. If you do choose to submit a one-page proposal, these are some things you may want to include: 1. Objective: What is the motivation for the paper? What question are you trying to answer? Are you trying to explain something, or test a hypothesis? If so, what? 2. Methodology: How will you go about answering the question, explaining the phenomenon, testing the hypothesis, etc? Will you do this using a narrative? Will you perform a quantitative analysis? If so, what type of analysis? What data (qualitative or quantitative will you need, and how do you obtain these data? 3. Work plan: What is the timetable for doing the research and writing the paper? Hard copy of you paper is due in lecture on Monday May 7, 2006
