Unformatted text preview: Recycling Aluminum by Rachel Soffer Lab Instructor: Kaushik Nanda Oct 3, 2007 Purpose: To perform an experiment with a theoretical yield of approximately 23 grams of Alum that will maximize the percent yield and have a melting point of 92.5ºC. Results and Discussion: Producing Alum from Aluminum In the first week of the experiment, 1.308g of Aluminum were used to yield 23g of Alum. Based on the following reactions: 2 Al(s) + 2 KOH(aq) + 6H 2 O(l) → 2 K + + 2 Al(OH) 4 ‾ (aq) + 3 H 2 (g) Al(OH) 4 ‾(aq) + H + (aq) → Al(OH) 3 (s) + H 2 O(l) Al(OH) 3 (s) + 3 H + (aq) → Al 3+ (aq) + 3 H 2 O(l) K + (aq) + Al 3+ (aq) + 2 SO 4 2 ‾(aq) + 12 H 2 O(l) → KAl(SO 4 ) 2 • 12 H 2 O(s) net reaction 2 Al(s) + 2 KOH(aq) + 4 H 2 SO 4 (aq) + 22 H 2 O(l) → 2 KAl(SO 4 ) 2 • 12 H 2 O(s) + 3 H 2 (g) was given.
