allostery  (al´ lo steer y) [Gk.  allos : other +  stereos : structure] Regulation of the activity of a protein by the  binding of an effector molecule at a site other than the active site.  anabolic reaction  A single reaction that participates in anabolism.  ATP (adenosine triphosphate)  An energy-storage compound containing adenine, ribose, and three  phosphate groups. When it is formed from ADP, useful energy is stored; when it is broken down (to ADP  or AMP), energy is released to drive endergonic reactions.  catabolic reaction  A single reaction that participates in catabolism.  catalytic subunit  The polypeptide in an enzyme protein with quaternary structure that contains the active  site for the enzyme. (Contrast regulatory subunit.)  coenzyme  A nonprotein organic molecule that plays a role in catalysis by an enzyme.  cofactor  An inorganic ion that is weakly bound to an enzyme and required for its activity.
