CIVIL WAR PAPER 2 Civil War Paper The United States had a civil war take place within its borders from 1861 to 1865. There were 34 American states at the time of this war and seven of the southern states (South Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Georgia, and Louisiana) wanted to secede from the union that had been established. The key issue that led these southern states to want to leave the union was the issue of slavery. A republican candidate by the name of Abraham Lincoln won the 1860 election and he was not fond of slavery and was looking to abolish. Abraham Lincoln wrote a letter to Lyman Trumbull on December 10, 1860 stating that “Let there be no compromise on the question of extending slavery. If there be, all our labor is lost, and, ere long, must be done again. The dangerous ground---that into which some of our friends have a hankering to run---is Pop. Sov.
