Dylan Ireland AP English Block 3 Reconstruction Essay During the Reconstruction period of the American Civil war spanning from 1864-1877, The United States attempted to repair the political, social, and economic reforms, the war had wrought, to ensure the government would be fair with its federal government and its citizens. The Reconstruction period was especially favorable for the recently emancipated African Americans as they were for the first time in history, entitled to civil liberties such as voting, and holding office in government facilities in the south. The Compromise of 1877 however destroyed this period of bliss for the freedmen, with the removal of the federal Union troops in the south who were protecting them, which allowed them to accomplish these feats in the first place. This decision sealed the fate of Freedmen rights, as the racist white majority was able to reclaim a major foothold in southern society and resume their oppression over the black population that would not only survive but become the status quo from 1877 to 1965. The Civil war put a gargantuan economic strain on the United States after surrenders were put into place, especially the South. The Confederate states, during the war began printing their own money, but printed too much of it in too short of time, causing inflation. With their crippling defeat at the hands of the Union, their money was reduced to the value of one confederate dollar worth $0.02. Another aspect of the south suffering economically from the
