What is Coronary Artery Disease? Coronary Artery Disease affects roughly 3 million people in the United States every year. Coronary artery disease is a condition where the major blood vessels that supply your heart with oxygen, nutrients and blood have become damaged or diseased due to them becoming blocked with cholesterol deposits, called plaque. When plaque builds up, the arteries become narrow, and that means decreased blood flow to your heart. Decreased blood flow to your heart can cause chest pain, called angina, shortness of breath as well as hypertension. If left untreated the blockage can become so severe that the patient will have a heart attack.
