Principles of Teamwork The following definition of an engineering design team is used, " a group of individuals working together toward a common goal, product, or solution that requires the sharing of expertise, knowledge, and ideas in a cooperative and interdependent fashion. The specific focus is on teams working on an engineering problem design, process, or product. " The italicized information is included to emphasize to participants that teams require groups of individuals to share information and knowledge in a cooperative and interdependent fashion. Past research has shown that "high-performance" teams exhibit high levels of team member cooperation and interdependency in working toward their goals. The important factors are: Team Approach to the Problem or Task. The focus is on how the team defines the task assignment and debates its approach to solving it. Team Leadership. How the team leader interacts with the team. Coordination of Task Responsibilities. The way the team meshes the various activities. Organizational Support.
