HUNGER SO WIDE SO DEEP2IntroductionWomen in the recent past have been the victims of the ideals that society has set for the appearance of their bodies and the objectification resulting from the ideals of society. This follows the objectification of the female human body illustrated in the top fashion magazines across the globe. This image has been, in turn, internalized by young girls and teenagers to large extents such that they have an external perception of themselves; they start viewing themselves through the lens of a third party other than themselves. The pressure put on women to uphold certain standards of beauty as well as to continue playing their roles in society builds up and thenbecomes detrimental to their body image, a good sense of self and their eating habits. This article is a work in sociology based on Becky Thompson’s arguments in her book A Hunger So Wide So Seep which builds on the eating disorders of an array of multiracial women she interviewed. This article highlights how she dispels the popular notion about the background of women who have these eating disorders. The author, Thompson, collected data from an array of women of around age 33, the majority of whom were dealing with eating problems for a large part of their lives for use in her book. Data was collected from women of color of the working class and the low socioeconomic class and were mainly identifying as lesbian. The multiracial and multibackground approach in Thompson's article seeks to show intersectionality. This article mainly focusses on intersectionality, body consciousness, survival strategies and also critiques the devotion to the thinness model presented in the book by Becky W. Thompson.ArgumentsBecky Thompson arguments are based on concepts such as intersectionality, body consciousness, and survival strategies. She however also critiques the culture of the thinness model. The ideas presented by Thompson in her book are illustrated below.
