Sze-Kai Wong (Kenny) 1 Warren WRIT 340: Section #66772 Date: October 17, 2007/10/18 Assignment #2 – Business and Politics/Policy Paper Lower Legal Age of Sexual Consent in California Human society is changing rapidly. The average first time sex age worldwide is 17.3 years old. 35% of people say that they lost their virginity at the age of 16 or under. Trend shows that people continue to have sex earlier than the previous generations. On average, people around 25-34 years old have their first sex when they are 17.9; 21-24 years old are 17.5; 16-20 years old are 16.3 (durex.com). “The age of consent is the age at which a young person is legally able to understand and agree to consensual sex.” It is illegal for someone to have sex before reaching this age. The age of consent law in the state of California suggests that it is illegal to have sexual intercourse with someone who is under 18 (Avert.org). A lot of teenagers think it is too harsh. Mental and Physically Health of Teenagers According to an article, The age of self-control, the author said that legal age of consent removes the freedom of young women below a certain age in choosing whether to have sex or not. There is no such provision for young males. Gender discrimination happens here. He thinks that the issue is not really the age of consent, but is about maturity and self-control. People may ask, “What is maturity?” The author gives a unique definition, “The essence of immaturity is to live life satisfying every craving that arises to obtain the pleasure.” He thinks that maturity includes the process to deal with them, to resist them, and to control them. Therefore, he thinks that the matter is maturity instead of the legal age of consent (Espeut, 2007). If a 16 years old teenager is really mature, and ready to have sex, unfairness is given to him or her. The government force has taken away the right of teenagers to have sex.
