Sociology of Drug Use 1.19.2016 Drug Classification & Effects - Heroin opiates/ opiods - Cocaine & stimulants - Weed & Cannabinoids What are drugs? - Broad class of substances that can: o Relieve symptoms o Stabilized emotional states Drugs to relieve anxiety or depression o Be used as an anesthetic What are euphoric drugs? - Drugs that perform above functions and induce sense of euphoria o Euphoria—a sense of well being, they make you feel better about yourself and better use your inhibitions A sense of confidence and make you use your own insights - Also called mood altering, recreational or psychoactive drugs o Drugs that activate you psychologically so that you feel more optimistic - Some mood altering drugs are legal o Alcohol, caffeine (make you feel more competent and increases concentration), nicotine ( it relaxes people) - Others are illegal food mood alteration (e.g. heroin, cocaine, weed etc) - The focus is on illegal mood-altering drugs -
