Sociology of Drug Use 1.21.2016 Do schedule I drugs have medical uses? Schedule I opiate - Heroin (diacetlymorphine)-its sister drugs do have medical uses Schedule II, III, IV, V (opiates/ opiods) These are narcotic analgesics They are also antitussives ( good for cough suppressants) Opiates come right from the poppy plant of opium gum (morphine is one of the active ingredients of opium gum and so does codeine) o But it is possible to synthesize opiods in a lab. They are created Heroin can do the same things as any of these drugs - Morphine o The base drug for heroin o Heroin is more powerful than morphine o Used for painkilling since the 1800s Analgesic ( aspirin is also an analgesic but for minor pain) - Oxycontin - Fentanyl** o The most powerful than heroin o Completely synthesized but it schedule II o Used as a pain killer o Easy to overdose - Demerol - Dilauded* o Synthetic o Sometimes you can make it more powerful than heroin but not all the time - Percocet o All of these above is the ones mainly used for pain o Schedule II - Codeine o A weak opiate but in the right amount can be similar to heroin o Robitussin used to be like codeine, so addicts would substitute by drinking massive amounts of cough syrup - Methadone - Suboxone/ subutex All schedule III o These two are used for the treatment of heroin addiction
