History 5 Midterm Judeophobia: Refers to hostility of Jews that was rooted in religion. They were the largest minority of that time. Colonialism: The Policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically. Race, Racism, Racial Superiority:oRace: A group of people who have differences and similarities in biological traits by society. Hitler and the Nazi’s believed that Jews were a race and therefore treatedthem differently and tried to get rid of all Jews as a race in the world. oRacism/Racial Superiority:Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior. Race Science:The Study of techniques and hypotheses to support or justify racism, racial inferiority or racial superiority. Hitler and the Nazi’s used race science in order to say that the Jews were inferior to the Aryans. This is why the Nuremberg laws were put in place, in order to Social Darwinism:The theory that individuals, groups, and peoples are subject to the same Darwinian laws of natural selection as plants and animals. Only the fittest in society survive. And in the case of the Holocaust, the Jews were not the fittest. “Aryan”, “Semite”, “Negro”, “Slav”oAryan: Denoted a race which had supposedly superior blood and culture during the Holocaust. They were basically people who were not Jewish/Roma/Sinti oSemite: A member of any of the peoples who speak or spoke a Semitic language. (Jewish/Arabs) oSlav: A member of a group of peoples in central and eastern Europe who spoke Slavic languages. Anti-Semitism:hostility or prejudice against Jews Treaty of Versailles (1919):A document signed between Germany and the Allied Powers following World War 1 that officially ended the war. Acculturation:Cultural Modification of an individual, group, or people by adapting to or borrowing traits from another culture; a merging of cultures as a result of prolonged contact. Observance: Jews slowly start to abandon marks that show that they’re Jewish. However, they still maintain that they’re Jews. Ashkenazi Jewries: Jews from Western, Central, and Eastern European communities. Yiddish:Came from medieval Germany. A mix of other languages with Hebrew Letters. Sephardi Jewries:A Jew who descended from Jews who lived in the Iberian Peninsula in the 15thcentury. Ladino:Also known as Judeo Spanish. A language of the the Sephardi Jews based on old Spanish and Hebrew Script. “Stab in the Back” Theory: Germany lost the war because of internal descent, not because of errors but because they were undermined by forces within.
