Dacia Woessner NURS 6521Week 11 Main PostOff Label Drug Use in PediatricsOff –label prescribing occurs when a child receives a medication that has not received FDA approval for the child’s age or diagnosis (Bazzano, Mangion-Smth, Schonlau, Suttorp, Brook, 2009). I am not sure that there is ever a circumstance under which children “should” be prescribed drugs for off label use. However, in many cases there is not a lot of research done on medications for children. In the Bazzano, et al, .2009 study states that younger children were more likely to receive off label medications because few medications are tested r approved in theyounger age group and this gives physicians limited choices for medications approved for younger children. One could say when it is a life or death situation you could give your child albuterol and it would help with the child’s respiratory issues. Or a major infection give the child an anti-infective medication to prevent a worsen infection.
