Monday Feb 20 - Second continental Congress - Created the Continental army - 20,000 and each state will have a militia - George Washington went the the boston area for - the Battle of Bunker Hill o Typical fighting - Continental style fighting. Lining up across from each other in a field around 30 yards away to come towards each other and fight coming towards each other o The colonials fought like native americans, behind trees and other ways to keep from getting hit with a musket ball o The colonials were fighting from on top of a hill and were outnumbered 3 to 1. The british were thinking that they were dumb and weren’t even prepared. But the colonials were shooting downhill and the british were unable to protect themselves from getting hit. The colonials thought they wre gonna win but they ended up running out of gunpowder which cost them the fight. Wed Feb 22 Fri Feb 24 - Battle Of Boston- Washington and the continental Army - Cannons were taken from a fort in New York - General Benedict Arnold - British at Boston Harbor - 22 cannons Monday Feb 27 - Battle of Long Island - British left boston and went away to wait for command from the british - They then decided to go to New York - Washington made the mistake to take the Army to New York as well to confront the British - 15,000 in the continental army under General Washington and 8,000 mass militia against 40,000 british army-navy men - Washington realised his mistake and started to retreat. They started fought and were pushed back onto Brooklyn Heights. They then ended up stopping fighting at night fall. - At night Washington had his army take boats back across the river to manhattan Washington was the last to cross and this took all night. This ended up giving them another day to fight otherwise they would have lost. When the British woke up the army was not there. The British followed them and they would keep retreating until the came to New Jersey in the Wilderness when the british stopped chasing them. - Battles o Battle of Trenton (1776) Trying to save his army. They stayed behind for all of the fall until December 26, 1776 in the “Battle of Trenton”
Washington learned from a spy that there was a Hessian Encampment about 20 miles from the Continental Army. The Europeans wouldn’t fight in the winter. Since it was around Christmas time the Hessians would be drinking and celebrating Christmas and Washington decided to attack the day after because of their weakened defenses. The weather came bad as the were crossing the delaware river and marched about 4 miles to the Hessian Encampment where the Hessians were incapacitated. They attacked and even captured some of them. They won this and it ended up being a big morale booster. o Battle of Saratoga (1777) 8,000 men under the leadership of general John Burgoyne “Gentleman Johnny” coming down from Canada - Plan that General William Howe would march north from NYC as the armies would meet and invade Massachusetts.
