The French occupation of Egypt in 1798 led to a shift in the global power . 5. Motives for imperialism included the desire to export their surplus industrial production, to find more profitable investments for their capital, and to secure raw materials needed for their factories . 6. These two countries played the most important role in imperialist expansion: British and French. 7. What country was the only non-Western power to be imperialist? Japan 8. What drug was imposed upon China leading to wars? Opium .
