ESM 206C Problem Set 4 Micro-Exam will be due Tuesday, May 27, at 4PM. Logistic regression A. Using the datasets on the course webpage (RatTumor.xls and pharm08.xls), recreate the analyses that were presented in lecture. There is a file under the “software” section of the webpage that describes how to use R commander to do logistic regression. B. Environmental economists often want to estimate the demand for “green” goods. The file apple.xls contains data from a telephone survey in which a (fictional) “ecologically friendly” apple was described. Each family was (randomly) presented with a set of prices for regular apples and the eco-labeled prices, and asked how many pounds of each type of apple they would buy. The variables in the dataset are described in the file apple.txt. Here we focus on whether the family would but any ecolabeled apples (variable “ecochoice”). 1. What factors do you think might influence a family’s choice to buy the eco- apples? 2. Which of these factors are contained within the dataset (you are free to combine and transform variables if appropriate)? 3. Estimate a model using the data. a. Are all of the factors significant? If not, should you keep them in the model? b.
