SUICIDE AND PROBLEM SOLVING ABILITY IN THE ELDERLY INTRODUCTION The numbers of people who committed suicide and succeed are increasing with the age. According to the findings of Turkish Statistical Institute (TSI) the number of suicides in 2013 was 3.189. The number of people who committed suicide whose age ranged between 50 and 70 was 622. When I consider the rest of the numbers for other age groups, it seems that the percentage of older suicide attempters is 19.5%. It is a huge part when we take the rest of the population into account. This situation makes me think that why all these people committed suicide? What kind of causes can lead a person to commit suicide? Then, I searched about the causes of suicide in elder people. I found that depression is one of the important causes of suicide in elder people. After that another question came up. What causes depression? All of these causes lead me to a specific cause that the decrease in problem-solving ability. In this paper I am going to talk about my study which aims to investigate the relationship between fluid intelligence and suicide in the elderly. To be able to do that I did a literature review and found some articles which was about my key concepts: fluid intelligence, depression and suicide. My research question; is there a relationship between suicide ideation and fluid intelligence in elder people? If there is a relationship between this variables, what is the direction and intensity of this relationship? As an answer to this question, I built a hypothesis. My hypothesis is that there is a strong negative correlation between the suicide ideation and fluid intelligence in the elderly. To answer the research question and support my hypothesis, I proposed an psychometric study and shared the details of it in this paper. LITERATURE REVIEW Suicide, Depression and Cognitive Abilities in Consideration of Age Depression is one of the important causes of suicide in elderly. In the movie of Shawshank Redemption, a man named Brooks hanged himself after he came out of prison. He was old and he thought he had nothing to do out of prison. To be able to understand these kinds of behaviors of elder people, the causes of suicide needs to be understood. Barnow and Linden(2000) conducted a study to investigate the epidemiology of suicide ideation and wish to be dead among elderly people over 70 years old. The results showed that major depression was the most important predictor factor for being suicidal among elderly. Statistically, the subjects who were diagnosed with major depression had 40 times higher risk for wishing to die and attempt to suicide than the persons without major depression. The results of this study showed depression as a major cause of suicide. But what about the causes of depression in elderly? The oldest-old was at the higher risk of depression when the risk factors of depression were considered. (Stek et al., 2006). The question was that what are the causes of increase in depressive symptoms with age? To test whether the depressive symptoms were driven by disablement related processes, aging processes or mortality
