Certifications and Continuing Education Introduction In this paper, we will discuss certifications and continuing education. We will identify a professional organization that will provide professional development for a role of choice. We will discuss professional development and other opportunities the professional organization provides a member. We will also discuss the importance of being a member of a professional organization. We will also provide a website for the organization of our choice for others to review. Certified Professional Coder A certified professional coder is a trained coder that is proficient in current procedural terminology, international classification of disease 10 and healthcare common procedure coding systems. According to "American Academy of Professional Coders" (2017), “Medical coding certifications from AAPC are the gold standard in the healthcare industry. Certifications are nationally recognized by employers, physician societies, and government organizations.” Providers perform the duties but the coder ensures that the providers are paid top dollar for the services that are provided. Certified coders are required to complete 36 continuing education
