1. Purpose: to make the audience aware of the lack of current paid maternity leave in America, share stories of working mothers, and explain why paid maternity needed for the future of working mothers. In the summary of her speech, Jessica Shortall (2015) says, “The time has come for us to recognize the economic, physical and psychological costs of our approach to working mothers and their babies, and to secure our economic future by providing paid leave to all working parents.” 2. Non-verbal delivery 1. Movement in Your Speech: Speaker used hands and arms to emphasize certain points as well as moved around the stage occasionally 2. Visual Aids: Power point presentation displaying stock card photos of “the working mother” and other photos relevant to the purpose of the speech. The photos were used as an example of false portrayal of the working mother. PowerPoint also included data maps and one slide with the word “choice” 3. Strategies for Success 1.
