Lauren BollierPeriod OneHastingsCivilization in the ancient world came about through the unification of the people and their ideas. Ancient Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt were two very different societies yet they shared similar ideas through the creation of their individual civilizations. Civilization was formed through the development of culture, technology, religion, and political beliefs. Mesopotamian society existed since 3500 BCE. The Sumerians invented cuneiform writing in order for priests to keep track of the inhabitants taxes and payments. Originally, they used split reeds in order to press shapes into soft clay. These shapes were very simple, often having multiple meanings. Over time, this developed intoa more detailed script, and the clay tablets were traded for papyrus scrolls. The development of written language helped the Sumerians interact with their people and other civilizations. One main technological feat that was developed by the Sumerians were their use if irrigation canal networks. In Mesopotamia, the farmland was all close together with a web of canals spread throughout to distribute water. This was very helpful for the extreme climate the people of Mesopotamia were exposed to.
