BOLLIER2Before its appearance in Greek culture, the sphinx is linked to ancient Egypt. With the headof a man and body of a lion, it is mostly shown in a resting position, although sometimes it isdepicted as trampling Egypt’s enemies.iThe Great Sphinx is a large structure in the Giza Plateaubuilt between 2723 BCE and 2563 BCE.iiIt is theorized that King Khafre is responsible for theconstruction of The Great Sphinx because its massive size was very common during his era. Alsoin his reign, it is said that he ordered twenty-two stone sphinxes carved to be three times the sizeof a human.iiiIn Ancient Egyptian culture, the sphinx was symbolic of the Nile and its changingseasons. It was thought to be the manifestation of the Goddess Hathor, goddess of birth anddeath.ivThe lore attached to the Egyptian sphinx is the guardian of the horizon and holds the key tothe wisdom gates. The Great Sphinx faces the rising sun on the Giza Plateau, so in the OldKingdom it was the focus of solar worship.vIn the New Kingdom, the sphinx was associated withthe God Horemakhet, or Horus of the Sun. A temple was built northeast of The Great Sphinx byKing Amenhotep II nearly a thousand years after it’s construction dedicated to the cult ofHoremakhet.viThe Sphinx of ancient Greece is thought by some to be a spin off of the ancientEgyptian version of the Sphinx, brought to Greece by traders or storytellers. The Sphinx of Greece was a mythical monster said to be the daughter of Orthus and eitherEchidna or Chimera, according to different versions of the lore.
