“Remarks on the Assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.”

Referring to the speech text and your textbook, explain how demographics would influ-
ence Kennedy's rhetorical choices.
Kennedy did a great job addressing the demographics of his audience. In the late
1960’s the racial tension was high in the United States as African Americans were fight-
ing for equality. Martin Luther King Jr. was the leading figure in the Civil Rights Move-
ment. Many black and white citizens looked up to him as he led peaceful protests.
Kennedy knew the assassination of Dr. King would lead many to hatred and violence as
they would feel hope is lost with the death of a great leader. Kennedy was scheduled for a
campaign stop in city in Indianapolis when he heard the horrible news. The police told
Kennedy they can not protect him if he chooses to go through with his speech. However,
Kennedy new the importance and felt he needed to be there to support his fellow citizens
through this tough time. Knowing the struggles and heart ache his audience would be fac-
ing, he shaped his speech to bring himself to his audiences level, sympathized with them,
