ME17, Summer, 2008 Problem Set #3 Due Tuesday July 15 th at class time IMPORTANT - The Midterm is on Thursday July 17th Reading: 8.1, 8.2, 9.1, 9.2, 10.1, 10.2, 11.1, 15.1, 15.2, 15.3, 15.5, 13.1, 13.2, 13.3 Handout on linear algebra in MATLAB. Problem 1. Given the matrix A = [10 2 -1; -3 –6 2; 1 1 5] write a short matlab Mfile to do the following and print the results Find det(A) using det. Find A -1 using inv . Verify that A A -1 = A -1 A = I by a direct calculation, i.e. by multiplying A * A -1 and printing the result. Hand in your Mfile and the printout. Problem 2. Do Problem 8.6. Set up the equations and use the backslash operator to solve the resulting linear equations. Suppose that you need to design the footing that is going to hold the left hand support. Find the total force and the angle of inclination of this force to the vertical for the parameters given. Hand in your M-file and the results. You can compute the force either in the program or by hand, but clearly mark where your answer is and how you computed it. Problem 3.
