ME17, Summer, 2008 Problem Set #5 Due Wednesday, July 30th at class time Reading: 13.1, 13.2, Various Handouts on Statistics, Chap 16, Chap 17, Chap 18 Problem 1. (Statistical analysis on a relatively large, real, data set) The first things students ask when a test is returned are: “What was the average? “ And “What’s the curve?” Gaurav has posted a data set representing the composite scores of midterms and problem sets from ME 151C, Spring 2008. It was a large class, so the sampling errors should be relatively small. A. Using the Matlab functions mean, median, and std , find the mean and median test scores and the standard deviation. B. Create a modified data set that represents the deviation from the mean . This will consist of a vector of realizations that has zero as its mean and both positive and negative values. Use the Matlab function hist to create histograms of the data. using 10 bins. Study the smoothness of the histogram as more or fewer bins are used. Use bins that contain 2, 5, 10, and 20 percentage
