Both articles, On the Brink , by Jack Beatty and Why the Markets Can’t Fix Themselves: Busted by George Soros, dissect basic problems that are being faced by the American and global community and also by individuals. The issue prevalent in both of these articles is not that the problems exist, but how should they be solved. Two major themes prevail. They can be solved by releasing control over them, and having things happen as the will (Soros’ “market fundamentalism”) or by leaving it up to each individual to make a decision on an issue that effects mankind at large (the “personal virtue” of conservation in Beatty’s article.) Or, people can come together and make collective decisions in the global community that has been created on how to manage the market, save the environment and increase standards in all sectors of civilized life.
