WEEK 5 INITIAL POST Overweight and obesity among adults in Michigan is a huge risk factor. According to the U.S. Census Bureau (2011) the total estimated population in the state of Michigan in 2010 was 9,883,640 and adults, defined as age 18 and older, make up 76.3% of the total population. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2010) 66.1% of adults were overweight with a body mass index of 25 or greater. Knickman and Kovner (2015) stated the trend of American adults that are overweight or obese is up from 12% just one decade ago; which is alarming as there is a strong link between obesity and many chronic conditions (p. 125). I believe the population based models of health promotion and disease prevention will empower the population to change behavior risk factors. Utilizing the Population Based Intervention Model's downstream, midstream and upstream interventions will help promote healthy behavior in the obese population (Knickman & Kovner, 2015, p. 132).
