WEEK 7 INITIAL POST Policy in health care starts with an idea usually relating to the direct effect of access, cost and quality of health care. Dr. Wakefield reported there are several factors that affect policy including crises, media, political ideology, personal experience, research, special interest groups, constituents, market forces and fiscal pressures (Laureate Education, 2012). Barack Obamas passion for implementing Health Care Reform came from personal experience. Obama alluded to his mother's experience stating " In a country as wealthy as ours, for us to have people who are going bankrupt because they can't pay their medical bills — for my mother to die of cancer at the age of 53 and have to spend the last months of her life in the hospital room arguing with insurance companies because they're saying that this may be a pre-existing condition and they don't have to pay her treatment, there's something fundamentally wrong about that" (Stencel, 2012). A policy affecting Michigan residents was the Approval of Medicaid Expansion that was implemented on April 1, 2014. "As of July 2015, 30 states and the District of Columbia have expanded or planned to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Michigan is one of only six states with a fully Republican-led state government to expand the program." ( Udow-Phillips , Lausch , Shigekawa , Hirth , & Ayanian , 2015).
