2660B - Chapter #13 (Leadership and Power in Organizations) What is Leadership ? leader - one in charge or the boss of other ppl there are formal and informal leaders Sources of Influence and Power French and Raven's (1959) Bases of Power power - the extent to which one person can influence another to do something 5 bases on interpersonal influence and power and how they can be used o expert power- give info, based on the knowledge and expertise that the supervisor has o referent power - get subordinates to like you and identifies with the supervisor o legitimate power - the power inherent in a supervisor's job title; get a high-level position or rank o reward power - give rewards for compliance; the ability of the supervisor to reward subordinates with bonuses, desirable job assignments, promotions or raises o coercive power - give punishments for noncompliance; ability of the supervisor to punish subordinates with disciplinary actions, fines, firing, or salary reductions Yukl's (1989) Sources of Political Power political action - process by which ppl gain and protect their power within the organization 3 means by which political power is achieved and maintained in organizations: o Controlling decision processes - controlling and influencing important decisions in the organization like allocation of resources o Forming coalitions - entering into agreements with other to support your position in return for you support of others' position o Co-opting - involves trying to diffuse another faction's opposition by allowing its members to participate in the decision Political Skill political skill - extent to which a person is able to influence others to engage in behaviour that is beneficial to that person or to the organization 4 dimensions of political skill

o Social astuteness - ability to understand ppl and social situations (does not involve understanding emotions) o Interpersonal influence - skill of convincing other ppl to engage in the behaviour desired or to accept a particular position o Network ability - developing relationships with a wide range on ppl and managing those relations to accomplish objectives o Apparent sincerity - skill of appearing to be or really being honest, open and trustworthy Abuse of Supervisory Power: Sexual and Ethnic Harassment sexual harassment - behaviour of sexual nature that is unwanted adversely affect a person's employment interferes with a person's job performance creates a hostile and intimidating work environment o
